Help Us Collect 4 Tons (8,000 lbs.) of Food Scraps & Be a Winner!

 

Be an environmental hero and compost! Drop-off your food scraps at any of our 10 Fairfax County Park Authority Farmers Markets during the week of June 25 to July 1 and get a free countertop compost bin (while supplies last).

 

Additionally, market-goers that drop-off scraps between June 18 through July 1 will be entered into a drawing to win a free bag of compost.

 

In May 2023, 3.7 tons (7,400 lbs.) of food scraps were collected. As we enter the summer season, our goal is to collect 4 tons (8,000 lbs.) of food scraps during the month of June. Help us reach our goal and be green too!

Public Library at the Burke Farmers Market!

 

The Pohick Regional Public Library will be at the Burke Market every other Saturday through July! This Saturday, June 17 they will be bringing information about the Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Program. Be sure to stop by to sign up! Located right next to Metro Microgreens.

Vendor Spotlight 

Partners in Lavender Hive

 

Meet Mimi and Yurllen, Partners in Lavender Hive, a flower farm located in McLean, Virginia. If you’ve seen their bright pink tent at the McLean Farmers Market, you know that the pair sells locally grown, pesticide-free flowers from a five-acre flower farm right in Mimi’s backyard. Mimi has a background in finance and has been growing flowers ever since she moved from D.C. to McLean in 2016, but it wasn’t until March of this year that Yurllen’s entrepreneurial spirit led them to start selling! 

 

They grow over 100 different types of flowers throughout the season, but they both agree, dahlias are their favorite. Dahlias start off as brown potato-like tubers and grow into beautiful flowers full of vibrance and beauty. Mimi and Yurllen expect to see dahlia blooms in early July, so be sure to head to the McLean Farmers Market on Friday mornings 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. to pick some up.
