Get a FREE compost bin when you bring your food scraps to the markets!

Market Fresh Events

Bring your food scraps to the Fairfax County Park Authority Markets!

From June 25 through July 1, the Fairfax County Park Authority will be handing out free countertop compost bins to customers who bring their food scraps to the markets, while supplies last. Check out what food scraps can be composted here.

Nurturing the Earth and Your Garden
Composting reduces greenhouse gases. When food scraps are stuck in landfills with no oxygen to help decompose, they begin to slowly release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Additionally, composting creates nutrient-rich soil. When food decomposes it turns into nutrient rich soil. This soil can revitalize exhausted farm soils, reduce erosion and run-off, and lead to stronger plants and crops.

From Farm to Market, Be a Part of the Fresh Food Movement!

Love the markets and want to impact change? We are seeking volunteers to help manage our 10 farmers markets across Fairfax County. Farmers Market Managers provide necessary on-site support to ensure our markets run smoothly. Managers are responsible for setting up supplies, supporting customers and vendors, explaining market rules and assisting with outreach and vendor selection. This is a great volunteer position for anyone that enjoys the outdoors, supports local farmers and food producers and wants to help bring fresh and local produce to the Fairfax County community!

Samkara Foods

Samkara Foods, owned by Archana Sikri, is a new addition to the Lorton Farmers Market this season.

Archana's passion for cooking started at a young age in New Delhi, India where she watched her mother and grandmother cook everything from breakfast to dinner.  Inspired to share her multi-general family recipes, Archana started Samkara foods last year. The company is named after her two daughters, Samira and Karina. You'll often find Archana accompanied by her daughters and husband handing out samples of North Indian cuisine including Tari Wala (chicken curry), Whole Masoor Dal (brown lentils) and Kheer (rice pudding).

Cooked with love and care, Samkara Foods allows Archana to share her family's healthy homestyle meals with the community. Stop by next Sunday at the Lorton Farmers Market to say hello.
