sReducing Plastic in the Markets

The Fairfax County Park Authority is taking bold steps to combat plastic pollution at their Farmers Markets this season. With alarming amounts of plastic ending up in oceans, the Park Authority is rolling out innovative measures to minimize plastic usage and encourage a more sustainable approach.

Embrace Reusables

The Park Authority's initiative kicks off with a push for reusable bags. During opening week of the Farmers Markets, we distributed 2,000 reusable bags! Be sure to visit us during Farmers Market Week for a chance to pick up washable produce bags!

Use Compostable Bags

Vendors now offer compostable bags as an eco-conscious substitute for conventional plastic bags. Look for the "BPI" label, indicating certification by the Biodegradable Products Institute. These bags can be returned to the market's compost tent for proper disposal, contributing to collective composting efforts.

Vendor Spotlight

Arnest Seafood

Looking for fresh, locally caught seafood? Look no further than Arnest Seafood—a family-owned business that sells crab, shrimp, flounder, catfish and more! Seafood had been in the Arnest family for generations before owner Lee Arnest first started the business back in the 90's. Fast forward to today and you’ll find Karen Arnest, Lee's wife, and her brothers-in-law selling crab cakes, crab dip, and fresh fish at the Mount Vernon, Wakefield, Reston and Burke Markets. Everything you see at the Market has been caught the day before right out of the Potomac River or Chesapeake Bay and is sold along with treats such as deviled eggs with crab meat.

Stop by the big red tent next time you’re at one of our Markets and say hello!
