Going on Now: Extended Season

Two weeks ago, the FCPA Farmers Market team visited Twin Springs Fruit Farm in Adams County, PA, known as the "Apple Belt." The rolling hills and soil in Adams County are ideal for growing apples, peaches, pears, and plums. Initially focusing on apples and stone fruits, Twin Springs has expanded to grow various vegetables, with fruit now comprising about one-third of their business. Their greenhouses boast 20-foot-long cucumber vines, cherry tomatoes, and rows of lettuce, thriving from Fall into Winter. The greenhouses are heated by a biomass system fueled by shredded wooden shipping pallets. Twin Springs Fruit Farm is present at over 20 markets throughout the DMV, including the McCutcheon/Mount Vernon Farmers Market, open until Dec. 20.
