Explore the Great Outdoors This Month

June is National Great Outdoors Month!
With warmer temperatures, sunnier days and schools starting to let out for the summer, June is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy nature. Spending time outdoors is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and can be fun and affordable. Whether you are on your own, with friends or family, make sure to hit the parks this month to go for a hike (June 4th is National Trails Day!), have a picnic, take a nature class, go camping, rent a boat, go geocaching, explore fishing, or enjoy a bike ride.

For a full list of outdoor happenings and activities, visit the National Great Outdoors Month page and the National Trails Day page.

Commemorate Juneteenth at the Parks

FCPA is committed to sharing stories, artifacts and archives to recognize the contributions, struggles and history of African Americans in Fairfax County and our parks. Join us for a program or tour, and learn more about this important observance on the Juneteenth page.

Dads, Cars and History Meet at the
47th Sully Antique Car Show

After a two-year hiatus, the Sully Antique Car Show returns on June 19, 2022. This date not only marks Father’s Day but also the national commemoration of Juneteenth. This year's show seeks to honor both occasions.

Dads and families can stroll among 350 classic and antique cars, enjoy live music, children’s activities, a flea market and food vendors, and a “Century” parade featuring cars at least 100 years old. For Juneteenth, there will be an opportunity to explore Sully’s historic past at the 18th-century slave quarter area and to learn about African American inventors and their contributions to American transportation.

Music in the Parks

The Fairfax County Park Authority Summer Entertainment Series is back, and it is music to our ears! Starting on June 3rd through the end of August, enjoy evenings of music in parks across the County as well as Saturday and Wednesday morning Arts in the Parks shows just for children! Performances are held outdoors and are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. FCPA’s Summer Entertainment Series is made possible thanks to generous sponsorships through the Fairfax County Park Foundation.

On June 28, join us for the annual Summer Concert in the Garden at Green Spring Gardens, from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring the children at 5:30 p.m. to learn about frogs, hear frog stories, enjoy art projects, and participate in games.

Pack a picnic basket, umbrella, blankets and lawn chairs, and meet us for some lively entertainment in the parks!

National Pollinators Month

National Pollinators Month began as National Pollinators Week in 2007 and was later expanded to the whole month. Pollinators Month reminds us of the importance of protecting pollinators by providing them with the right environment for plant pollination and avoiding the use of pesticides. By protecting pollinators, we can ensure the steady production of food resources, which is more important than ever.

To learn more, sign up for one of the various pollinator-themed programs offered this month, such as "The Buzz on Bees" on June 12 or "Bees Please" on June 21 at E.C. Lawrence, or gardening programs for adults like "Native Plants for Pollinators" or "Eco-Gardening Ideas Evening Stroll at Green Spring," both on June 25 at Green Spring Gardens. Be on the lookout for resources on how to create attractive habitats for pollinators locally.

Did You Know: Plastic Swans?

Did you notice the unusual visitors at the Ellanor C. Lawrence pond? The plastic swans are decoys meant to deter Canadian geese from nesting at the pond and to reduce the likelihood of negative geese-human interactions. Canadian geese are not native to our area and can be aggressive when nesting. Feces from the geese can also accumulate on paths and docks around the pond, posing a potential health risk and increasing nutrients in the pond, which harms the fish.

The swan decoys are a temporary measure and will be removed soon. They may be used again next year from the end of February until the end of May.
